A dog's nail contains a pink-colored blood vessel, called a quick. Regular nal trimming will cause the quick to recede from the end, reducing the chance that it be accidentally cut and making future nail maintenance easier.
 
Instruction Hold the trimmer with thescrews and front plote facing away from you. Cut the nail a little at a time until the nail is even with the bottom of the animal's pad. If your pet's nails are extremely long, trim just a little at a time on a weekly basis. This will cause the quick to retreat back into the nail, allowing you to reach your desired length.
